Postgame video and quotes — American 71, Army 68

American beat Army 71-68 on Saturday to improve to 13-10, 7-5 in the Patriot League. See below for full video and select quotes from head coach Mike Brennan and Sa’eed Nelson, who nearly finished with the school’s first triple-double since 1979. Nelson had 11 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

MIKE BRENNAN
On Jacob Boonyasith scoring a career-high 20 points
”Aggression. You’ve got some guys who haven’t played a ton of minutes. Jacob, just trying to get his way through the offense — just kind of knowing what to do. So it’s hard to do that and be aggressive. So I just tell him — you don’t have to know what you’re doing, just be aggressive. He gave us big minutes, and most importantly defending better. He’s out there defending, rebounding, talking, moving.”

On the status of Marvin Bragg and Sam Iorio
”Still, it’s like concussion stuff — you don’t know. It’s kind of day to day. They’ve got to go through the protocol and they’ve got to feel a certain way before you start the protocol.”

On the Josh Alexander and Mark Gasperini lineup
”Josh has played primarily center, so it’s him knowing the forward spot and being comfortable out there doing it. Actually, I’m not worried about him on offense, to be honest, even if he doesn’t know what he’s doing because he has really good instincts. It’s more defensively — guarding perimeter guys.”

On Sa’eed falling just short of the triple-double
“It would have been nice for him because it would’ve been an exclamation point on the kind of year he’s having so far. He’s been so great for us. I don’t want to say he deferred, but he allowed other guys to make plays at the end today.”

SA’EED NELSON
On the near triple-double
”It’s a nice stat line. I mean, a win is way more important. I’d have been upset if I’d have had 11-11-10 in a loss.”

On Jacob Boonyasith
”It just opened up the floor for everybody. It’s easy for guys to see me and think I’m the only one doing something so they just pack the paint. So to have other guys be aggressive and get easy shots and easy layups — it’s going to help us now and down the line.”

On scoring on 16 of 21 possessions to start the second half
”(We were) just matching their aggressiveness. We had a talk in the locker room before we came out in the second half that they were just being more physical than us and we just can’t let that happen in the second half. Those first possessions, they just proved that we weren’t backing down.”

More on Jacob’s offense
“Just him taking his time and learning the offense and learning how to be patient. We want him to shoot, but just to know when to shoot. I think like tonight he just picked his spots. That step-back, that’s what he does. He just hits tough shots.”
