American sputtered in the second half at Holy Cross, losing 70-64 on Wednesday to fall to 6-22, 3-14 in the Patriot League heading into the regular-season finale vs. Bucknell. Here are five key plays/sequences from the game.
1. American comes out firing from 3
American came out moving the ball well and the result was pretty — a first half in which the Eagles shot 8-for-15 from 3 to take a 38-31 lead to the locker room.
2. Butler gets to the hoop
American had issues handling Holy Cross freshman Austin Butler all night on drives to the hoops, many of them off screen-and-roll actions. Butler finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
3. Another bad second-half start
For whatever reason, American has been plagued by terrible starts to second halves most of the season. Wednesday was no different. Holy Cross came out with purpose and put an 11-1 run on the Eagles to erase its deficit and take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
4. Larry Motuzis keeps American afloat
Larry Motuzis kept American alive late in the second half, scoring nine consecutive points on two 3s sandwiched around a 3-point play that got the Eagles within two.
5. Jehyve Floyd's big second half
Jehyve Floyd, who terrorized AU in the teams' first meeting, was almost nonexistent in the first half. But the big man was the difference-maker the final 20 minutes as he recorded all four of his blocks and scored 12 of his 14 points — helping to close the door on Holy Cross' win.
