Five Key Plays: Army 58, American 54

Here are five key plays/sequences from American's 58-54 loss to Army on Jan. 8, which dropped the Eagles to 3-12, 0-4 in the Patriot League.

1. American defense forces Army into 12 first half turnovers
American played its best defensive half of the season. That combined with sloppy Army play led to the Black Nights turning the ball over 12 times compared to 24 shot attempts in the first half.

2. James Washington provides big minutes off bench
He didn't fill up the stat sheet, but James Washington was a steady veteran presence for the Eagles in a season-high 25 minutes. Washington directed the offense often, had a big steal and layup, and generally kept things moving when on the floor.

3. American goes on 10-0 run
It was American's best two-minute stretch of the season, a 10-run that involved play-making on both ends and points both in the halfcourt offense and transition. AU's burst gave it a 30-23 lead before an Army bucket to end the half. AU grew the margin to 10 early in the second half.

4. AU turns it over seven times on 14 possessions
After taking a 10-point lead, American's offense became sloppy as the Black Knights quickly came back and took the lead.

5. AU goes scoreless last 6:21 of game
After taking a 54-50 lead on Sam Iorio's triple with 6:21 left, American couldn't muster a point the rest of the game going scoreless on its last 11 possessions. Many of the empty possessions were missed layups. Afterward, Mike Brennan said: "Everything that we ran we essentially got. I mean Sa'eed right at the rim, Sam's right at the rim twice, I thought we got a couple open looks. So it's just again finishing."
