Five Key Plays: Colgate 72, American 63

American fell to Colgate 72-63 on Jan. 2, dropping to 3-10, 0-2 in the Patriot League. Here are five key plays/sequences from the loss.

1. C.B. Diallo with a strong start
C.B. Diallo got off to a hot start for the Eagles, scoring on or assisting on the Eagles' first eight points. AU needs C.B. to be this aggressive and to use his slashing ability to help break down defenses.

2. American offense stalls much of first half
AU's offense was stagnant much of the first half, resulting in many late shot-clock possessions and two violations.

3. American offense comes alive in second half
Trailing by eight early in the second half, American's offense came alive. The Sa'eed Nelson/Sam Iorio 1/5 screen-and-roll (or pop) in particular was greatly effective, as Iorio made strong cuts to the basket for layups.

4. Jordan Burns AU
Down the stretch, the problem that plagued AU early in the game returned as the Eagles couldn't stay in front of guard Jordan Burns.

5. Sloppy execution dooms Eagles
As Mike Brennan said after the game, it's the little details that are the difference in such a game, and the Eagles didn't execute in the last couple minutes and turned the ball over on four of five possessions.
