Five Key Plays: Western Illinois 69, American 56

American lost to Western Illinois 69-56 Wednesday night, its third straight defeat. Here are five key plays/sequences from the game.

1. Brandon Gilbeck block party
WIU's 7-footer caused issues for AU from the opening tip, blocking three early shots and affecting others in the paint. He was the best player on the court all night with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks.

2. AU gets to rim with Gilbeck on bench
After Gilbeck picked up his second foul, the Eagles immediately attacked the rim with success.

3. Dalan Ancrum gets hot
WIU's leading scorer didn't register a point during the first half and was saddled with foul trouble. It was only a matter of time before he got hot in the second half, scoring on three straight possessions as WIU built its lead to double digits.

4. American mounts comeback to tie game, 54-54
Behind 3s from Sa'eed Nelson and Sam Iorio, the Eagles scored eight consecutive points tie knot the score with 5 minutes left.

5. Western Illinois ends game on 15-0 run
The Eagles ultimately ran out of steam. It's worth noting that Nelson and Larry Motuzis both played 40 minutes, Sam Iorio played 38 in his return from the flu, CB Diallo played 34, and Jesse Little 32. The Eagles had very little depth, and not much in the tank down the stretch, especially after expending the energy to get back in the game from 10 down.
