Five Key Plays: American 69, VMI 64

American won its second consecutive game over VMI on Saturday, 69-64. Here are five key plays/sequences from the win.

1. Terrible start at home
For whatever reason, AU came out lethargically and quickly fell behind 11-2 in its home opener.

2. Marvin Bragg gives AU early spark
After its very slow start (down 11-2), things seemed to worsen for the Eagles when Sam Iorio had to leave the game eight minutes in not to return (illness). But in stepped Marvin Bragg, who immediately began doing the little things on both ends to get AU back in the game.

3. AU takes control with 15-2 run to end half
Drew Lamont made a 3 and blocked a shot on the other end, CB Diallo got a steal, and Sa'eed Nelson turned a steal into a layup as AU finally snatched the lead by turning defense into offense.

4. Sa'eed gets to the hoop in the second half
Sa'eed Nelson talked afterward about how much easier it is to play with shooters like Larry Motuzis and Sam Iorio from a spacing standpoint. This was evident in the second half as VMI respected AU's shooters and he was able to get to the rim.

5. Larry Motuzis scores 21 of career-high 26 in second half
Larry Motuzis is a scorer — this much is clear through five games. The second 20 minutes Saturday was the perfect microcosm of his offensive prowess. Motuzis scored on 3s, on drives, at the free-throw line, and finally with an emphatic dunk.
