Head coach Mike Brennan and senior Charlie Jones spoke after American defeated Lafayette 71-57 to improve to 5-1, 2-5 in the Patriot League. Full video above and select quotes below.
"We got better shots than we have in the past. I thought that was a big difference in how we played tonight. I thought they missed shots that they normally make, so that always helps."
ON BEST 3-PT SHOOTING GAME (8-15) OF SEASON
"I mean, we worked on shooting. I think guys are getting more comfortable with what shots to take. And I think we just got better shots tonight and we took the right ones."
ON ALEX AND ANDRIJA's BIG NIGHTS
"Alex knows what he's doing — he sort of gives us steadiness on the court, he knows when to drive, when to shoot an open shot, and sort of when to stick with the offense, and same thing with Andrija. Andrija's had some much better practices than he had in the past."
ON GASPERINI STAYING OUT OF FOUL TROUBLE
"Yeah, that's what we've been preaching to him — don't foul, don't foul. Don't say this, but I don't care if the other team scores (laughing). That's not quite true, but I'd rather him be out there just to get experience, get touches. He threw some passes tonight, which is good — a couple backdoor passes."
ON DELANTE JONES FINDING HIS SPOTS
"It's a little bit of Delante, but it's everybody else, too. Everyone else has to stick with the offense. I thought he got more stuff tonight where somebody else is making a play and he's like the recipient of an open shot because someone else drives or Charlie's in the post kicking it out to him. And then it's a little bit easier for him to pick and choose his spots to go one on one."
ON FACING LAFAYETTE'S DIFFERENT ZONE LOOKS
"We sort of were expecting it, we knew what we were looking for a little sooner, so we did those things and I thought we got good looks tonight and were able to knock them down."
ON LOOKING VERY FRUSTRATED THROUGHOUT THE GAME
"I'm always visibly frustrated (laughing), you know. Nah. I keep telling them you want to win games and the record's important, but as long as we're improving that's the most important thing to me."
HOW IN RHYTHM DID OFFENSE FEEL?
"I think we did a better job sticking with our offense and getting shots out of our offense instead of everything breaking down and guys kind of now knowing what they're doing tonight. It felt like we were more on point, in a rhythm, and on the same page."
ON HIS OFFENSIVE NIGHT (18 POINTS, 8-10 FGs)
"Just knowing when I'm open to be a threat and knock down/make shots — hold my follow-through, trust my shot."
