American head coach Mike Brennan spoke after No. 1 Villanova ran away from the Eagles, 90-48, in AU's final non-conference game. Full video above and select quotes below.
"Even if they play bad, they don't play bad because they play together and they play so hard. It was a total buzzsaw. I didn't think we were ready for it. I thought we hung in there and did some good things in the first half to try to stay in it, but it was just too much."
MORE ON MATCHING UP WITH VILLANOVA
"... It's a good game for us to experience just to see, 'Hey, this is the best team in the country.' They go hard every play and they share the ball. It was fun to scout them just to watch their games. Not fun to play them, though."
HOW MUCH OF FIRST HALF WAS AU PLAYING WELL/NOVA STRUGGLING
"A combination. We did some good things. They obviously missed some shots that helps you. Against a team like that you need them to do that for two halves just to be close. But I thought we did some good things against a really good team — just couldn't sustain it."
ON GASPERINI GETTING INTO FOUL TROUBLE
"That's the biggest thing. I wanted him to play the minutes tonight and he didn't do it. It's hard to say, 'Don't get into foul trouble' when you've got Josh Hart running around, Kris Jenkins, all these good players that are moving fast, (are) good, savvy players. So I wish — wanted him obviously just to be on the court. But he's played a ton of minutes so far and he's doing terrific. I'm thrilled with his progress. He's gonna be good and we're asking him to do a lot. He's gotten better at all of it every day."
ON HIS TEAM GOING INTO LEAGUE PLAY
"I'm happy with our group — where we are. I feel good about being ready to go when we play Loyola when we get back and just going for it from there."
