Head coach Mike Brennan spoke after American fell 71-54 to Howard, dropping the Eagles to 1-6. Full video above and selected quotes below.
BIGGEST REASON FOR THE TURNOVERS?
“Yeah, just indecision. I mean, they play the zone a lot of different ways so we probably prepared for too many of them. Probably should have just picked one, had an idea of, this is what we’re gonna try to do. So I think I probably threw too much at them in preparation for such a young team. You’ve got too many options, you choose none of them almost.”
ON LONNIE’S PROGRESS, MENTAL ASPECT OF GAME
“He’s been banged up a little bit so he hasn’t practiced at full strength so he’s a little behind in that regard. But I liked everything he did tonight.”
ON DELANTE’S STRUGGLES AFTER 2ND HALF TUESDAY
“You’ve got to really understand and see and be able to make good decisions against a zone like that and I think it stifles a lot of players. That’s something we’ve got to work with Delante on — seeing and decision-making rather than just go.”
ON HOWARD GETTING TO THE HOOP
“I think when you don’t score it sort of deflates you a little bit defensively too. This happened last year too. If you don’t score, you think, ‘Oh, man, we’ve got to stop them every single time’ which is impossible, so it kind of takes away your juice on the possessions when you really need it.”
