Maryland 62, American 56: Mike Brennan postgame quotes

Mike Brennan spoke after the Eagles' 62-56 loss to Maryland to open the season. Full video above and selected quotes below.

BRENNAN ON THE FRESHMEN
“That’s why we got them. They’re good. Obviously a lot of work to do but I think there’s so much more there that we can get out of them. But I was happy with them — how they did tonight. Sa’eeed played for a great, great high school program. He’s used to playing in big games, big stages like that. Mark played for a terrific high school coach who obviously worked with him, got him better. So we’re lucky to have those two guys.”

ON BEING OUTREBOUNDED 44-22
“We needed more guys to be involved on the rebounding effort and we didn’t have that so that’s something that obviously we’ve got to work on.”

ON DELANTE'S VISION
"Yeah, it’s gonna be a I don’t want to say a struggle, but something he’s gotta get better at. I was happy. We sort of ran a play for him to get the ball but he saw that a guy was open and he made a pass that was a big bucket to Charlie. So that was huge progress right there.”

ON BIGS SHOOTING FROM THE PERIMETER
“Yeah, well they can make them. They’re good shooters. I think they’ll get more consistent as the year goes on. To be honest, I didn’t expect them to make many today. I was happy that they did. So now they can’t just rely on that — it’s a good skill to have but we need them to do big-guy stuff.”

SILVER LINING IN TERMS OF KNOWING CAN PLAY TOP 25 TEAM CLOSE
“I’m more happy that we just competed, I’m more happy that sort of I have an understanding of what we need to get better at. There’s games like this every year at this time where they’re a little closer.”

ON CAUSING 18 MARYLAND TURNOVERS
“Charlie and Sa’eed was the key defensively. Charlie, I mean, he’s just so active. Sa’eed has just a natural ability. But I thought their sort of defensive awareness and using their hands, they’re just good basketball players.”
